George was the second of eleven children born to Rufus Burley and Mary Malinda (Moose) Combs. He married (1) Nannie Moore in 1886 and they were the parents of two children: Maria M. and Robert Esker. He married (2) Margarete Elizabeth Sharpe in 1891 and they had fourteen children: Ella E., Walter Rufus, Clarence Wilson, Benjamin Franklin 'Frank', Mary Effie, Beulah C., Espy Clifford, George Sharpe, Cinthia Eva, Beauford Alexander, Emit James, Alene Elizabeth, Eunice Leona 'Polly' and Hayden Burk.
