Dr. Gladys Haskin Underwood, age 82, a retired dentist who also earned medical degrees from the University of Toronto and Northwestern University, died at her Vancouver home on Jan. 1, 1999 of cardiopulmonary arrest. A Portland dentist for many years, she also taught 18 consecutive years in Mexico and California and lectured in Europe, South America and Japan. Dr. Underwood gave lectures four times a year in Europe for 32 years. Dr. Underwood served on the trustees board at the old St. Joseph Hospital for 25 years and was on the building committee. She was a clinical professor in oral pathology at the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center for 14 years and had been an officer and member of the American Institute of Dental Medicine for 38 years. She was a 25-year member, officer and lecturer for the International College of Oral Pathologists. When Dr. Underwood was in the accelerated medical-dental program in the 1940's, there were only two women in her medical school class and she was the only woman in her dental class. In the 1950's she was elected vice president of the Pan American Medical Women and was a member of the European Association of American dentists. Dr. Underwood was also president-elect of the American Association of Women Dentists. She had academic degrees from Marylhurst College, the University of Oregon and the University of California, and doctorate degrees from the University of Toronto and Northwestern University. Dr. Underwood is listed in Who's Who editions of Women of the World, Women of Science and Women of the West. Her husband, Dr. E. Arthur Underwood, an opthamologist, practiced in Vancouveer with his father before he died in 1975. Dr. Gladys Underwood was born in Centralia, Washington and lived in Vancouver, Washington since 1943.
