Manager for Joy Division and New Order,founder of Rob's Records label, partner in Factory Records and The Hacienda Club. Gretton started out as a DJ at Rafters nightclub championing British punk bands like Buzzcocks, The Fall, Slaughter and the Dogs. During 1977 the band Warsaw (soon to be renamed Joy Division)peeked his interest when they played Rafters. He became their manager and set sites on finding them a record contract. Gretton found another believer in Joy Division's talent in the person of Factory Records founder Tony Wilson. Together they got the band out of a prior contractual arrangement and signed Joy division to the Factory label.
Gretton died of a heart attack in 1999 at the age of 46.
