Son of Thomas William Smith and Flora A. Ihlenfeldt, brother of Evelyn Smith-Padgett. Lived and attended school in Chicago, Illinois until joining the service during World War II. Went into the the U.S. Navy around 1942 and served for 22 years until 1964. Made his home in Springfield, Illinois upon returning to the states. Worked for Pinkerton Security, including Springfield Capital Airport.
