Evelyn Smith, daughter of Thomas William Smith and Flora A. Ihlenfeldt, was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois with her brother, Roy Earl Smith, until she graduated from high school. While her grave marker indicates that she was born on January 9, 1917, birth and census records found afterward, show that she was actually born on that day in 1916.

After growing up in Chicago during the Prohibition years and then the Great Depression, Evelyn decided to move to Springfield, Illinois around 1939 where her mother's family lived. She spent most of her summers in Springfield with her maternal relatives who had a small farm on North Grand Avenue West near the Illinois National Guard.

Soon after moving to Springfield, Evelyn met a neighbor, Frank Alexander Crenshaw and got married to him around 1941 in St. Louis, Missouri. They had one daughter, Barbara Louise Crenshaw in 1943. She divorced Frank around 1946 and after a few years married Paul Padgett around 1951. During the 1950s, Evelyn operated a small diner at Larson's Tavern in the 1950s. Paul died in 1967, Evelyn died at the age of 58 of cancer in 1974 in Springfield.

Her mother's Ihlenfeldt family plot at Oak Ridge is only a few feet away from where her and Paul are buried. In the top photo, the obelisk of the tomb of President Abraham Lincoln appears in the center between the trees.
