He was highly esteemed, and filled many positions of much responsibility with integrity and honor. As a financier he had few superiors. He was, in 1836, Treasurer of the State, and President of th e Raleigh and Gaston Railroad. He was averse to popular promotions, but was elected to the Senate of the State Legislature in 1864.
