Rufus Lenoir Patterson Sr. was the eldest of three (really only three?) known children of Samuel Finley Patterson (1799-1874) and Phebe Caroline Jones Patterson (1806-1869), who married 12 May 1824 at Wilkes County, North Carolina. Rufus was born at Palmyra, Wilkes (or Halifax?) County, North Carolina.

Rufus married first to Marie (went by Mary) Louise Morehead (1830-1862) on 06 Apr 1852 at Guilford County, North Carolina. Mary was the daughter of the ex-Governor of North Carolina, John Motley Morehead. Rufus and Mary were the parents of five known children, namely:

1. Caroline (Carrie) Finley Patterson Coble Frazier (1856-1931)
2. Jesse Lindsay Patterson (1858-1922)
3. Letiticia (Lettie) Walker Patterson Fries (1860-1884)
4. Louis Morehead Patterson (1861-1886)
5. infant son Patterson

The order of birth of the last child is unknown. After Mary died, Rufus remarried to Mary Elizabeth Fries (1844-1927) on 14 Jun 1864 at Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina. Rufus and Mary Fries Patterson were the parents of six known children, all sons, namely:

6. Francis H. Fries Patterson (1865-1933)
7. Samuel Finley Patterson (1867-1926)
8. Andrew (Drew) Henry Patterson (1870-1928)
9. Rufus Lenoir Patterson Jr. (1872-1943)
10. John Legerwood Patterson (1874-1935)
11. Edmund Vogler Patterson (1878-1934)

Rufus graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and studied law, but never practiced it. Rufus was a prominent Salem merchant and manufacturer, as well as a politician. He served as Mayor of Salem from 1867-1868. He was an early leading advocate of the consolidation of Salem and Winston.
