Fred was the son of German immigrants Christian Friederich Obenland and his wife, Christina Seivert. He was born in Rankin, Vermillion County, Illinois.

On September 12, 1918, Fred registered for the draft for WWI. He listed his occupation as a farmer. His description on his draft card says that he was of medium height and build, with blue eyes and brown hair.

On March 4, 1926, he married Laura L. Phillips. They had twelve children, Shirley Barbetta (10/5/1926), Harold Art (11/13/1928), Mary Ann (6/19/1931), Herman Everett (11/13/1934), Beverly Maxine (3/31/1936), Christian (4/29/1938), Patsy Patricia (7/7/1939), Charles Leonard (7/3/1940), Gerald Eugene (6/3/1941), Herbert Allen (1/30/1943), Donald Leon (5/5/1944) and Robert Marvin (6/15/1947).

The 1930 Census shows the family living in Vermillion County, Illinois. Fred was a farmer, while Laura kept house for the family.

Fred passed away on April 29, 1980 in Rankin, Illinois. He was buried in Rankin Union Cemetery.
