Physician. Hugh Lenox Hodge, the son of Revolutionary War surgeon Hugh Hodge, attended the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) from 1812-14 where he earned an A.B. degree and graduated with honors. He began his medical studies a year later at the University of Pennsylvania under the instruction of Dr. Caspar Wistar. After earning his M.D. in 1818, Dr. Hodge traveled to Calcutta, India, as a surgeon on a merchant vessel hoping to earn enough money for a European visit. While in India he was able to learn about the cause of and remedies for malignant cholera. Returning to Philadelphia in late 1819, he established a medical practice for himself and quickly made connections within the medical community. He taught his first course in 1821 as a substitute in Dr. William Horner's anatomical studies class. In 1823, Dr. Hodge was invited to lecture on surgery at Dr. Nathaniel Chapman's private Medical Institute where he stayed for the next twelve years. A family friend by the name of Margaret Elizabeth Aspinwall became Dr. Hodge's wife on November 12, 1828, and helped him raise a family of seven children, all boys. During the cholera epidemic of 1832, Dr. Hodge's experience in India helped him battle the disease within the community, for which he was honored by the city of Philadelphia. In 1835, he was appointed professor of obstetrics at the University of Pennsylvania and would remain in that position for more than thirty years. Princeton University awarded him an honorary degree of LL.D. in 1871. Dr. Hodge was a pioneer in the field of gynecology and obstetrics and a prolific writer of numerous articles and textbooks. Despite his impaired vision, which developed later in life, he continued writing up until the day of his death.
