Physician. H. Lenox Hodge was the third generation of Hugh Hodges to practice medicine in Philadelphia. Graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 1855 as the first in his class, he delivered the Greek Salutatory Address. He then began his medical studies under the direction of his father, Dr. Hugh L. Hodge, and received the degrees of A.M. and M.D. in 1858. Lenox was affiliated with a number of Philadelphia medical institutions over the next few decades, first being elected one of the resident physicians to the Pennsylvania Hospital. In 1861, he was appointed Demonstrator of Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania and later Demonstrator of Anatomy. For the next 10 years, he also worked with students providing extracurricular lectures and examinations through the Medical Institute. During the Civil War, Lenox worked in the Satterlee Hospital in West Philadelphia and was also attached to the Pennsylvania Reserve Corps of Surgeons, rendering valuable aid in the field at Yorktown, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg. He was later affiliated with the Children's Hospital and the Presbyterian Hospital. Memberships included the American Medical Association, the College of Physicians, and the Pathological Society. Other organizations that benefited from the devoted attention of both Lenox and his wife, Harriet, were the Society for the Organization of Charity and the Second Presbyterian Church. Lenox and Harriet's first daughter, Jane, died at birth. Their son, Hugh L. Hodge Jr., was raised by his uncle from age eight after the death of his father.
