Mrs. Mary Saxton Was Burt County Pioneer Mother
Passed Away January 31 at the Age of 90 Years
Funeral services were held last Thursday afternoon for Mrs. Mary Saxton, 90 year old Burt County woman, who passed away in an Omaha hospital on January 31.
Services were held at the Schaefer & Peck funeral parlor and burial was made in the cemetery near Bertha.
The service was in charge of Rev. John I. Paton, Tekamah Baptist minister.
Mary Black, daughter of Martha Stewart and John Black, was born in Guernsey County, Ohio, on July 14, 1852, and died at the South Side Hospital in Omaha, January 31, 1943, at the age of 90 years, 6 months and 17 days.
She was one of a family of four children, one brother and two sisters, all preceded her in death.
At the age of three years she moved with her parents to Wisconsin. At the age of 14, she moved with her parents, by covered wagon, to Burt County, Nebr., arriving in Tekamah June 8, 1866. She grew to womanhood in the Arizona community.
She was united in marriage to W. E. Saxton, on Sept. 10, 1871. To this union were born 8 children. Three sons and one daughter preceded her in death. Those surviving are: James of Tekamah; Mrs. Margaret Armina Morrow, Tekamah; Marion and Lloyd E. of Decatur. Aside from these there are 17 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
After her marriage for 22 years she endured the hardships of the pioneer on a homestead in the upper Silver Creek community. Then for 18 years she lived in and around Tekamah. In 1912 Mr. and Mrs. Saxton retired to Decatur. There the husband, and father, W.E. Saxton, passed away on Dec. 11, 1923.
Mrs. Saxton lived in Decatur until she entered the South Side convalescence Home in Sept., 1942.
Mrs. Saxton has been a member of the Riverside Baptist Church since 1904. She was a real pioneer mother and always took a great interest in her family and home, and because of her friendly disposition was loved by all those about her.

W. E. and Mrs. Saxton in the divide, lost two of their boys, aged 7 ½ and 10 years by diphtheria. One died Saturday evening, the other Sunday morning and both were buried in one grave in the Grace Cemetery, near the Grace Lutheran Church. Services were held at the home, by Rev. J.W. Kimmel on Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Saxton have the sympathy of the entire community in this their double grief made the more severe because others of their children have the same disease and are still in danger.
