Charlotte Elizabeth (Burkhart) Layton was born June 8, 1826 in Hawkins County, Tennessee, one of the many (12) children of John Burkhart (1787-1856) and Rebecca Ann (Baltzell) Burkhart (1800-1884). She moved with her siblings and parents to Kentucky, Illinois, Iowa and then took the Oregon Trail to the booming town of Albany in the Willamette Valley of the Oregon Territory, traveling 2,000 miles in five months and arriving on October 16, 1847. She was to be the first woman school teacher in the area as she had taught school previously, and, on August 23rd, 1849, married Davis Layton of Pike Co., Ohio, (1822-1862), who had also come West in 1847, most likely traveling in the same wagon train. They had a son, Augustus Caesar Layton, b.Jun 4, 1850 and a daughter, Ladonia, b.1853. Tragically, Charlotte died on Feb.3, 1854 and became the 2nd adult to be buried at Riverside Cemetery in Albany, Oregon. Her daughter, Ladonia, died in 1855, although her burial site has not been located; it is assumed she is interred at plot 12n with her mother, father and brother. Davis Layton remarried, Feb 5, 1857, to Margaret Emma (Hogue) Layton, b.Oct.25, 1840. She and Davis had two daughters. Lodema was b.Feb 7, 1860 but died Feb 9, 1862 and their 2nd daughter, Sarah, was born Nov 20, 1861, but passed Jan 22, 1862. Davis died 3 months later on Apr 22, 1862. His wife, Margaret passed away 8 months later, Dec 6, 1862. Augustus lived to be 33 years old; he married and had six children, passing from this life in 1884. All are buried together in plot 12n. May they all rest in peace.
