The son of Balthasar & Catherina (Ritzman) Matter, he married Catharine Wagner and fathered James (b. 02/13/53), Mary Ellen (b. 08/16/54 - married Reuben Benjamin Miller), John H. (b. @1856), Alfred Franklin (b. 08/06/59), and Elmer C. M. (b. 05/17/62). In 1860, he was a fireman living in Wiconisco Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, and stood 6' 0" tall with dark hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of thirty in Lykens Township, Dauphin County, April 26, 1861, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg that day as a private with Co. F, 10th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 31, 1861.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of thirty in Harrisburg October 31, 1862, and mustered into federal service there November 4 as a private with Co. I, 93rd Pennsylvania Infantry. Ill throughout most of his service, he discharged by surgeon's certificate to date February 2, 1863, from Philadelphia's Mowrer (Chestnut Hill) U.S. Hospital for "phthisis."
