Early in life, Alf farmed in the Eureka area and also trucked for various businesses, including the Libby's plant in Eureka. He then worked for Central Illinois Harvester from 1970 to 1984, before he retired. After he retired, he worked at Getz Greenhouse and Nursery in Eureka from 1985 to 2006, last working at the age of 95.
Those who knew Alf knew his love for collecting things. He was an avid collector of pens and pencils, caps, key chains and many miscellaneous items. Alf also had a love of horses since horse-pulled plows, which was his method of farming in his younger years. Alf also provided a crop of well-cared-for tomatoes in his garden. Alf was a member of the Eureka Apostolic Christian Church.
Alf was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, four brothers and five sisters.
Surviving are: one son, Randy (Connie) Grusy of Eureka; one brother, William (Hazel) Grusy of Georgetown, TX; one sister, Virginia Jarnagan of Cedar Rapids, IA; two granddaughters, Jennifer (Josh) Gladson and Michelle (Rob) Waldo, both of Eureka; and three great-grandchildren: Natalie, Tanner and Hunter Gladson.
