Mechanical engineer. Founder of the automobile brands Horch and Audi. He been descended from an old winegrower and smiths family in germany. He studied at the college of technology Mittweida and worked from 1891 to 1899 as a mechanical engineer in Rostock, Leipzig and with Carl Benz in Mannheim. In 1899 he founded enterprise Horch and Cie in Cologne and built in 1900 his first automobile. The enterprise grown, and he shifted his company in 1902 to Reichenbach. In 1903 he introduced the first german car with a four cycle engine. In 1904 he shifted his enterprise once more and founded the Horch and Cie Motorwagen-Werke AG in Zwickau. In 1907 he developed his first 6 cylinder engine. His vehicles reached big success in the european motor sport. In 1909 he left the enterprise after financial difficulties and differences of opinion in the supervisory board. After he had not been allowed to pull up his surname once again for a company name, he founded the Audi Automobilwerke corporation. He left the active business in 1920 and was only a member of the supervisory board. From 1920 to 1933 he worked as a automobile-competent. In 1922 he received the honorary doctorate of the technical college of the town of Brunswick/Germany.
