Nancy married Benjamin Swett at the age of 21 in Ames County, Ohio. Swett family researchers state she was born in Pennsylvania; however, her oldest son John stated in 1900 that she had been born in Maryland. She was the daughter of John Johnson. Their first child was born in Ohio. The remaining five known children were born in Indiana (probably all near Fort Wayne in Allen County). Nancy relinquished her rights of dower in an Ohio land transaction in 1844 to Jonathan Swett II, along with her other siblings. She and Benjamin were residents of Allen County at that time. In 1852, they migrated west on the Oregon Trail. Nancy was widowed and lost two of her children and baby grandson to cholera on the trip west.
Nancy and her children ended up in Oregon City, where she met Andrew Sprouls, a widower. She is listed as his wife in the 1860 California census; however, descendant and Swett family researcher Gary Burlingame believed that she was just his housekeeper and they had never married. A marriage record has not yet been located; however, the couple posed for a photograph together, which indicates they probably were married. On July 28th, 1889, she came to Rohnerville to live with her son Cornelius. Her death in 1900 was listed as due to "indigestion and old age." She was 92 years old. She is buried in the Old Rohnerville Pioneer Cemetery outside of Fortuna. The vandalized cemetery is missing most of its stones and none exist for any member of the Swett family. Two photographs of Nancy exist from the 1890's, one with her presumed second husband and one by herself.
