Son of Ebenezer and Elizabeth (Lowell) Hancock. Husband of Elizabeth "Betsey" (Scott) Hancock.

John and Elizabeth married on November 18, 1799, the wedding officiated by Reverend Samuel Parker.
Boston Latin Class of 1780.
Proprietor of The Boston Athenaeum.

He was a contributor to the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association of the Union in 1858 that lead to the purchase and preservation of George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate in Virginia in 1860. (John dined with George and Martha Washington at Mount Vernon in May of 1799. John later had a son named George and another son named Washington, both named in honor of President Washington.)
John was a member of the Humane Society of Massachusetts.

BOSTON, Jan. 3.-John Hancock, a nephew of John Hancock, the Revolutionary patriot, died yesterday, aged 85." - The Daily Dispatch, January 5, 1859 [He died at the age of 84.]
