ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Joan (Morton) Bonney, 73, of Anchorage, recently of 73B Fairview Drive, Greenfield, Mass., died June 2, 2004, at home.

Born in Syracuse, N.Y., May 9, 1931, she graduated in 1949 from Drew Seminary in Carmel, after which she moved to Wellfleet, Mass., to help her family start a tourist camp. She then attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She was married to Richard Bonney of Newton, Mass., in 1953, and graduated in 1954 with a degree in English.

After raising her three children in New Jersey, she began a long career in early childhood education. She was a teacher for Head Start in Camden, N.J., for many years. She continued her family and children's work after moving to Charlemont, Mass., with her husband to start a bee-keeping business, Charlemont Apiaries, in 1978. He died in 2001.

Her positions included director of Valley Play School in Shelburne Falls and assistant director of the Girls Club of Greenfield.

She enjoyed reading, natural history and square dancing.

Survivors include a son, Richard Jr. of Ithaca, N.Y.; two daughters, Cynthia of Anchorage and Linda of Los Gatos, Calif.; three brothers, George Morton of Fort Myers Beach, Fla., and Cole Morton and Philip Morton, both of Wellfleet; six grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.

A memorial service will be held June 23 at 5 p.m., at Stump Sprouts Ski Touring/Retreat Center, West Hill Road, West Hawley, Mass.
