Gideon was born in OH to Dr. James P. Miller and Rachel Lane. They moved to Iowa where Gideon enlisted in Co. E, 39th Iowa Infantry Volunteers 15 Aug 1862 and was mustered out 5 June 1865. By 22 Oct 1865 Gideon was in Greene Co. IN when he married Mary Samantha Goodnight whom he had met in TN while serving as a soldier. He and Samantha moved that same year to section 16 of Kendrick Township, Greene Co. IA where he worked as a farmer until his death. Gideon and Samantha had one son James P. Miller
