Funeral services for Joseph Exley, 88, formerly of Gresham were held Tuesday, Feb. 13, at 10:30 a.m. at the Bateman Funeral Chapel in Gresham.
Exley was born in Vanwert, O., the son of Christoph and Catherina Exley. As a small child he moved to Gresham where he was raised and received his education. As a young man he was a conductor on the old Portland street cars. After his marriage to Pearl Metzger in 1910 he left the street cars to go to work for A. W. Metzger Hardware store of Gresham.
His wife Pearl preceded him in death in 1926. He died on Feb. 10 in Gladstone.
In his earlier years in Gresham he had been a member of the Zion United Church of Christ. Also in his early years he had been a member of the Woodmen of the World. In his later years he and his son, Joseph, had the Exley Express Company based in Portland.
He is survived by children Joseph of Portland, Helen Baker of Stafford; Adelbert of Los Angeles, Calif.; Wilburt of Hayward, Calif.; and Margaret Stabler of McMinnville. He was preceded in death by two children Robert formerly of Gresham and Catherine formerly of Gresham. Also surviving are sisters-in-law Eva Metzger and Roberta Exley; 14 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Private vault interment was held in the Gresham Pioneer Cemetery in Gresham.
