Asa Newton Paschal was a Union soldier for the 114th Illinois when he was captured at the Battle of Brice Crossroads near Guntown, Mississippi on June 10, 1864. He was taken to the dreaded Andersonville Prison where he died two months later. He was the son of Coleman Paschal and Sarah Street. He was the beloved brother of my great-grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Paschal Hobson. His name is mispelled on the Andersonville gravestone as J.M. Pashall. His Civil War letters have been published in the book "From Beardstown to Andersonville."
