James was one of seven children born to David and Sophia Morgan Melville.

The other children were: Sophia, Helen, Charlotte, John, Margaret and Thomas.

He married Euphemia Lawson June 1, 1868 in St. Cuthberts Pa., Edinburgh, Scotland.

They had the following children; David, Sophia, Agnes and Alexander.

James was an engineer who recruited coal miners from Scotland to work in the coal mines in the United States, mostly Indiana. He traveled many times from the United States to Scotland bringing miners to work in the coal mines. Among these miners were; Robert Salmond and James White Waugh, great grandfather's of Ronald Salmond.

Several generations down the line, Joseph Whitehouse Hagin was born. He later became the Deputy Chief of Staff for George W. Bush.
