Elizabeth was the fourth of five children of Thomas W. Shuman and Susanna Bowman Shuman (Thomas was a noted businessman in early Hagerstown, Md).

She married William Moffett in 1813 who also became a noted businessman in Hagerstown, Md. They had 8 children.

William died in Hagerstown, MD at age 49 of Cholera during a epidemic while tending to his ill friend, John McIlhenny. They both died on October 15, 1832 and were buried side-by-side. Two months later Elizabeth gave birth to their 8th child.

Elizabeth was too distraught to handle his estate and 6 years later, after the death of their 19 year old daughter, moved with her children to Brownsville, PA to live with her uncles. Even there, where she had a number of relatives, Elizabeth could find no comfort, pined away and died of grief 1 year later on March 10, 1839. The older children and other relatives took the younger children into their homes.

Elizabeth is my 2nd great grandmother.
