Lucy was the daughter of James Alfred King and Sophronia Eleanor Hicks. She was born in Arkansas and moved with her family in a covered wagon to Oklahoma for the Land Run.

She married William E. Barnard in 1894 in Norman, Oklahoma. Lucy and William were the parents of one child, a son. Lucy died shortly after her 25th birthday. She is buried in the same cemetery as her brother Selby.
