Clay was the son of Ferdinand Wood. Clay grew up in Monroe County, Iowa. He and the family moved to Kansas, where his father, Ferdinand, helped found the town of Milan, in Sumner County. He married Alice Margaret Davis, who bore him five children. He was a farmer, up until his children grew to adult hood. He died in Wellington, Kansas.
