Lewis Hankey born in Hanover, Germany b. 2/24/1785 d. 3/19/1873; reared amidst the strife that existed between Prussia, France and England. Our grandfather had no memory of his parents as they both died when he was a small boy and didn't even know their Christian names. He had a sister Barbara, but what became of her is not known either. The name originally was "Henke" and while his lineage cannot be traced it is derived from noble
families of Germany.

It is related that he had just enough money to pay his passage across the Atlantic and he furnished his own provisions. The ship lost its course and consumed more time than was anticipated, his stock of food ran out and he became indebted to the ship for board. On reaching New York City he was sold by the ship's company, as was customary in the day; they getting the money for his time which he worked out with a farmer. Afterword he became a
minister of the Evangelical Church and carried on with farming in Pennsylvania. He married Cathrean Less b. 4/1790 d. 12/16/1865 from New York whose father served seven years in the Revolution. In later years they lived in both Stark and Summit Counties. Living the end of their lives with youngest son Samuel.

As told by grandson Israel L. Hankey
