Claude Chana was was an early settler in the Johnson Ranch area near Wheatland. Hearing about John Marshall's discovery of gold at Coloma, he decided to try his own luck; On May 16, 1848, he found gold at Auburn Ravine ... at what is now the town Auburn. There is a huge statue of Chana in "Old Town Auburn", honoring his accomplishment.

He was also a fruit rancher who helped establish the fruit tree industry of northern California.
