John M. Hockett was born in Randolph County, Indiana, on September 21, 1837. When only one year old his parents moved to Iowa and settled on the farm near Denova where he lived at the time of his death, his father entering the land. He was married to Mary E. Hammar, the daughter of William and Ann (Mills) Hammar on October 14, 1858.

He had a birthright membership with the Society of Friends, and was converted near the age of thirty. His faith in Christ increased and the path grew brighter as the end drew near. He frequently expressed a desire to be ready to meet the Master when the summons should come.

He was visiting friends in Salem and returned home at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 19. While unharnessing his horses between 4 and 5 he was stricken with apoplexy, and continued unconscious until he passed away at noon the next day, February 20, 1903.

He leaves a faithful and loving wife, one boy whom they have raised from childhood, three sisters (Mary Frazer Coffin of Denova; Jane Frazer of Marshalltown; and Margaret Mills of Denova) and three brothers (Jonathan of Brooks County, Kansas; Eli of West Grove; and Nathan of Mt. Pleasant), nieces and nephews and a host of friends to mourn the loss.

Funeral services were held at Cedar Creek on Sabbath morning at 11 a.m., conducted by the pastor, Bessie Ferguson, assisted by Tamer Maddock. Those present from a distance were, a brother Jonathan and nephew John Hockett from Kansas; a sister, Jane Frazer from Marshalltown, Iowa; a niece and two nephews, George Hockett and sister Nancy and Arthur Hammar from Ringgold County, Iowa; also a sister of Mary Hockett, Margaret Addington and husband of Dallas County, Iowa.
