Thomas was the fourth son of John and Mary Morrish. The English at that time were using the system of primogenture, the practice of the eldest son inheriting the entire estate upon the fathers death. Being a later born son, Thomas and his wife Fanny and their five children, the eldest being twelve years old, decided to come to the New World. Thomas was the first son of John Morrish to settle in America. He was a shipwright, uneducated and poor save for a very little training in the "Ragged Schools" of Bideford,England.
Thomas and family left Barnstaple England in the spring of 1843. After a voyage of nine weeks and many hardships, being nearly lost twice, they landed in Quebec, Canada in June. After remaining in Canada a short time, they started overland for Michigan, crossing the Detroit River by ferry boat. Then, they traveled overland by ox cart. In July, they had arrived at the home of Fanny's brother in law Barthlomew Glass south of Flushing, now Clayton, Township, Michigan.
When the family arrived in Michigan, their wordly possessions were clothes,a chest of carpenters tools, and 18 pence which is equivalent to 36 cents.Thomas secured 20 acres in section 11 with $120 he received from Bernard Carpenter for building a barn. This site was later known as the Sherman farm.Thomas was carpenter,a farmer, cattle buyer, and money lender in his American home. He died comfortably well off.
