James was a 28-year old laborer, born in Preble County, OH. He joined on January, 4, 1864, and was in Madison Township, Lee County at the time of enlistment. He was 5'8, hazel eyes, light complexion. He was recruited by Captain Rutledge of the 19th IA regiment. Looks like he received a bounty of $160 for joining.
Joined regiment February 17, 1864, and was in a skirmish at Pierce's Point, FL (near Milton, FL) on October 18, 1864. The 19th fought against the Florida 1st Battery Light Artillery (1 Union killed, 1 wounded). Also he was in a raid on Pascagoula, MS, and a skirmish near Goods Landing on Dog River, MS in 1864, and in expedition (?) against Mobile, Al where he was killed by a musketball.
Death was caused by a gunshot to the head while regiment was advancing on Spanish Fort, AL on 27th day of March, 1865.
