Robert was killed on April 8, 1865, the last day of The Civil War at The Battle of Spanishtown in Alabama. Details about Robert's death come from a letter from his sister Susannah Owen Bentley to her husband George Bentley. "Robert was shot in the right shoulder and bled to death on the eighth day of April (1865) about 9 in the morning by Sharpshooter at Mobile, Alabama. Robert and his Orderly went out to see the Breast worker. His Orderly said to Robert, they are shooting at us let us go back to camp. Robert turned to look at the Rebels once more. His Orderly said did you hear that bullet go into that stump? Robert said, I am shot, won't you help me? They took him to the hospital. But was dead when they got there."
