Jane was the fourth of 10 children, and the second of six daughters, of Matthew Rankin and Mary McCullough. Jane was married to Robert Rankin on June 25, 1835 in Plumcreek Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. Robert and Jane had the following children: John M. Rankin, Matthew A. Rankin, James G. Rankin, Joseph P. Rankin, Mary E. Brownlee, Robert T. Rankin, Martha J. 'Jennie' Rankin, Margaret I. Johnston, William D. Rankin, and T. Newton Rankin.

"Mrs. Jane Rankin died at her home at Elderton, Armstrong county, on January 21, 1899, aged 84 years, 9 months and 12 days. She is survived by eight children, six boys and two girls. Her husband died 25 years ago. She was a member of the Presbyterian church and the remains were interred at Shelocta on Monday."

"the following children survive the mother: J.M., of Blairsville; Mrs. Jesse Johnston, of Elderton; James G., Robert T., and T. Newton, of Rawlins, Wyo.; Wm. D. of Armstrong township, and Lizzie, at home. The deceased was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian church at Elderton. The funeral services were conducted at her home on the following Monday by her paster, Rev. Dunbar. Interment was made at Shelocta."
