Obituary

Harriet Ayers was born near Paris, (then) in Jefferson County, Indiana, February 7, 1830. She departed life a firm believer in the immortality of the soul, September 2d, 1900, aged 70 years, 6 months and 25 days. She and Joseph Ayers, who survives her, were married December 2d, 1851, and as husband and wife shared each other's pleasures and sorrows for almost half a century. By reason of this union six children were born, five of whom survive her. She became a member of the Baptist church in the Spring of 1854, and thereafter remained a faithful, devout, christian worker in the cause of her Lord and Master, until the end of her earthly pilgrimage. Mother Ayers as she was familiarly called by those who intimately knew her, was ever ready to assist the sick and distressed; many, many tears has she shed with those who wept by reason of misfortune or loss of dear ones by death. As the old men and women who knew her stood around her bier in prayerful silence, one was heard to say "Her husband Uncle Joe, has lost his companion but that he will in a few years meet her on the other shore, where their meeting will be endless and their reward joy;" that comes only to those who live the consistent, christian life that she has lived. Her children has lost a mother who loved them as only a true mother can do. Her mortal remains were tenderly laid to rest in the Paris cemetery; her life example was left a monument for those who knew her. Brass, mortar and stone may and do crumble and fade away because they are earthly. The monument that mother Ayers erected in the minds and hearts of her aquaintances, near and dear is everlasting, a beacon light pointing out to them the harbor of eternal happiness, ever lasting Joy and rest, where her spirit is now in waiting for them. Mother Ayers your monument shall have inscribed upon it letter of recollection of you and your faith more precious than gold.
