"Death Takes Mrs. Wittliff: Pioneer resident of county leaves 65 descendants." Mrs. Theresa Wittliff, 92, pioneer resident of St. Clair County died today in the home of her daughter, Mrs. R.F. Ott, 1524 Eighth street, after a long illness.
Mrs. Wittliff was born in Bromberg, Germany, in 1838. After her marriage to Joseph Wittliff, she lived in Berlin a few years. She came here with her husband in 1869. They settled at Anchorville in a log cabin which still stands and is one of the few log cabins in the county. It is on the shore road, 1/4 mile west of Algonac.
They moved later to Richmond, where Mr. Wittliff was the town's first tailor. In the late 70s they moved to St. Joseph, Missouri, and came to Port Huron in 1883. Mr. Wittliff died here in 1891.
Mrs. Wittliff was a devout member of St. Joseph's Catholic church and one of her sons entered the priesthood.
She is survived by five sons, John S. Wittliff, former Port Huron postmaster; J.C. Wittliff, Los Angeles, Calif; L.A. Wittliff, Los Angeles; Rev. Fr. S. A. Wittliff, Pontiac; and P. Leo Wittliff, Detroit; two daughters, Mrs. R.F. Ott, Port Huron, and Mrs. Frank Smith, Monradia, Calif.; 23 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's church, Rev. Fr. Wittliff celebrant of the mass, will be assisted by Rev. Fr. Thomas A. Connell, pastor, and other priests. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
