At 1:30 o'clock Friday afternoon, death claimed James P. Harnett, a member of a family whose name is linked with much of the early history of the Middle West, and long a resident of Pleasant Plains. Although well along in years, Mr. Harnett had enjoyed comparatively good health up to a short period before his death. He was 82 years old.

Surviving him is one son, William L., who makes his home in Springfield. There are thirteen grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the residence of S. Earl Purvines, a nephew. It was a large and representative gathering that assembled about the bier to pay a last tribute of respect to the honored dead. Rev. W. C. Shaffer officiated, assisted by Rev. Leo Howard.

The pallbearers were James McLean of Chicago, George O. Purvines and S. E. Purvines, nephews, and George, William and Harold Hand, grandsons. Burial was in Pleasant Plains Cemetery."
