Reuben followed his father's blacksmith trade, and in 1837 he left Canterbury, CT and traveled with his widowed mother, his wife and their nine children along the Erie Canal to Buffalo where he built Buffalo's first forge in 1843. In later years, Reuben became the Justice of the Peace of the Black Rock Court for Erie County.
