George was the son of Worner Moon/Mohn and Anna Catherine Crowl both born in Langenselbold, Hesse, Germany. His father died in PA and his mother died in Allegany Co., Maryland.

He was a German mercenary who switched sides because he came to love the American ideals. In 1829 he purchased a farm from Samuel and Mary Kerr. The deed was recorded on 12 Apr 1830. He supported his family by farming.

George married Ruth Anna Martin in 1789 and between 1791 amd 1818 they had 7 boys and 5 girls. In the order of their births they were named: Johannas "John", Jacob David, Elizabeth, Sarah Catherine, George Martin, David Daniel, Mary Ann, Ruth, Daniel, Samuel, Susannah Ann and Martin Moon.

The will of George Moon dated September 29, 1856 was signed with his mark (X) which would indicate he couldn't spell his name. In his will he bequeathed $100.00 to each of his surviving sons - Jacob, Daniel and Samuel. Martin was willed the farm. His daughters each received $10.00 and at the death of Ruth Anna the daughters were to divide the household furniture and goods.

George's parents are still unconfirmed - he could be the son of a Vernor Mohn, a Georg Barnhart Mohn (or Mann), or possibly a Johannes Mohn. Several Moon, Mohn, Mann families emigrated from Germany to Pennsylvania in the 1730's, and settled in Berks and Bucks counties. The serious genealogists have yet to sort out where our George belongs in the family trees.

In any case, our George is known to have moved to Virginia (near Lovettsville) in the late 1770's probably with other family members. George married Ruth Anna Martin and started raising a family in Virginia. Their children born in Virginia were Johannes, Jacob, Elizabeth, Sarah Catherine, George Martin Moon, David, and Mary Ann. Around this time, the family moved north to Butler County, Pennsylvania, settling in Muddy Creek Township. The children born in Pennsylvania were Ruth, Daniel, Samuel, Susannah and Martin.

In February 17, 1851, Wolfcreek Twp was divided into 3 parts. The central part called Pine Grove, or Pine, because of the cluster of pine trees which stood on a hill west of the town. The actual residence, from the Combined Atlas of Mercer Co., 1873, is approximately 2 miles west of the Wolf Creek as it passes through the town of Pine Grove/Grove City.

A note found with photos and other records also indicates a Negro servant named Jennie McKenery (b.Oct 1822) lived with the family. No further information has been found on Jennie to confirm.
