John was a member of the 6th Tennessee Volunteer Infantry. All his brothers, except David Lawson Rentfro (Arkansas CSA), served in the same Union company. John was short. At one time he had severe bronchitis and lost his voice except for a throaty whisper. Apparently his comrades razed him considerably about it. He is supposed to have snuck off sentry duty one cold wet Dec. night and hid by the guards shack out of the rain. I rather image he did not want to become more ill than he was by that time.
John served with his brothers Calvin Luther, Stephen, William Lindsey and Francis Marion Renfro in Co. G. All survived the war except Stephen who was killed at the Battle of Nashville. At one point in his pension file an exasperated clerk wrote in large black letters "THE BROTHERS SPELL THEIR NAME DIFFERENTLY."
