In 1851, Abner Jones moved with his parents and siblings from their homestead in Ohio to a new one in McDonough County, Illinois. Six years later, he took out on his own and moved to either Kansas or Missouri. Around 1860, just prior to the start of the American Civil War, he returned to his Illinois family who by then were living in Scotland Township in McDonough County. There he engaged in farming with his family. Abner married Mary J. Blair on March 23, 1871 in McDonough County. Together they had two sons. Sometime around 1888, Abner moved his family to Linn Township in Cedar County, Missouri, where he established a homestead and farm. His obituary states that he died at his home after a long illness.
