James Faulkner was born 11 Dec 1824 in Loudoun County, Virginia.

His parents were Kemp Faulkner (1794-1874) and Elizabeth Hawkins Perry Faulkner (1795-1865). According to the local history, "the family came overland by wagon to Ohio, camping by the wayside at night, spending six weeks on the journey. They drove a fresh cow alongside the wagon. They first lived in Muskingum County then came to Vinton County, Ohio in 1834. Purchased land here and soon had a log cabin erected with the very simplest and rudest of furnishings, including a puncheon floor and a door made of heavy wooden slabs."
This farm was located in Swan Township, Vinton County on a hill at the top of what today is known as Mash Hill Road between Siverly Creek and Dunkle Creek. James' first wife was Phoebe Kaler (1830-1859). Two years after her death he married Phoebe's first cousin, Mary Elizabeth Kaler (1840-1905). With Phoebe Kaler, he was the father of Elizabeth, Sara, Ephraim, William and John. With Mary Kaler he was the father of Amelia, Lucy and Irene. He is buried next to his parents.
