The son of Alexander & Magdalena (Schmeltz or Smeltz) Klinger, in 1860 he was a farmer living with his family in Washington Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Millersburg, Dauphin County, June 18, 1863, mustered into state service at Harrisburg June 20 as a private with Co. K, 26th Pennsylvania Militia, promoted to corporal June 24, and honorably discharged with his company July 30, 1863.

He married Hester Uhler April 20, 1869, in Berrysburg, Dauphin County, but they apparently had no children. Cause of death is listed as "chronic interstitial nephritis" accompanied by "hypertrophic prostate (cystitis)."
