LANCASTER - John "J.W." Marsee, 96, of Lancaster passed away Friday, Aug. 29, 2008, in Danville after a long illness.

Born Aug. 17, 1912, in Garrard County, he was the son of the late George B. and Elizabeth Sutton Marsee. Mr. Marsee had been a part of the Garrard County school system for more than 34 years. He served as superintendent for 28 years.

In addition to his service in the school system, he was instrumental in bringing economic development to Garrard County. He served as a member and secretary of the Chamber of Commerce and helped bring the National Casket Co. and the Cowden Manufacturing plant to Lancaster.

He also was a member of the Lancaster Lodge No. 104, had been an active Rotarian where he had 28 years of perfect attendance in Rotary, was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps, was a director emeritus of Whitaker Bank, had served as a member of the Garrard Bank Board, and was a devoted member and elder emeritus of First Lancaster Presbyterian Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ann K. Rich.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Edith Tuttle Marsee; one son, John (Karen) Marsee of Lancaster; two daughters, Ann (George) Clark of Whiteford, Md., and Elizabeth Mohr of Ruckersville, Va.; six grandchildren, Kevin (Lisa) Clark, Eric (Deena) Clark, Allison (Scott) McLaughlin, Sara (Eric) Comley, Aaron (Pleasant) Marsee and Nick Marsee; and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held 4:30 p.m. Friday at the First Lancaster Presbyterian Church by Dr. James Rucker. The family will be receiving friends from 2:304:30 p.m. Friday at the church. A private burial service will be held in the Lancaster Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers are active members and officers of the church, Whitaker Bank Board members and Tim Scott.

The family suggests expressions of sympathy go to Heritage Hospice, Gideon's International or a charity of one's choice. Ramsey Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
