Eli Spurgeon served in the Civil War as a private of Lt. Samuel R. Larimer's Company C, 62nd Regiment of Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was enlisted by Alexander M. Poundstone of the 62nd Regiment of Ohio Volunteer Regiment at Zanesville, Ohio on October 5th, 1861. He was discharged on July 14, 1863 at Folly Island, South Carolina by reason of Chronic Rheumatism. This was contracted while on duty in Virginia in the month of June 1862. It probably resulted from much exposure to which he was subjected to at the time. Since that time he has not been able to do more then 1/2 duty. He had grey eyes and dark hair.

According to a sworn affidavit from Lt. Larimer(October 13, 1871), Eli was confined to Alexander Hospital for some time before his discharge was issued. He was present at the time of Eli's discharge.
