Notes:
George was the first born child of John Fowler Mitchell and Charlotte Enfield Ralls. He had several siblings, but the one with whom he stayed closely in touch was his brother, William. His other siblings were: Sarah Jane born 12-03-1824; John born 08-02-1826 (died at age 3); Thomas born 1828; Frances born 09-26-1831; and Walter Thomas born 1833. All except for William were born in Maysville, Mason County, Kentucky. William was born in Montgomery County, Kentucky, at the home of his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Frances Ralls.

George married Sarah Elizabeth Peck, daughter of James and Eunice (Knight) Peck, in Maysville, Mason County, Kentucky, on March 16, 1848.

George gathered data on the History of the Mitchell Family in a booklet that his brother William published in 1898. In that booklet, George lists his children with Sarah:

--Charlotte E born Cincinnati, OH, 01-05-1849, died 7 years later.
--Rosabell S., born Cincinnati, 09-25-1850
--John F. born Indianapolis, IN, 09-03-1852
--Richard H. born Indianapolis, IN, 09-23-1854
--Twin to Richard, died in Greenfield, IN, age 4 1/2 months.
--Stillborn infant, born sixth child to the couple.

Shortly after their marriage, the couple moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where George worked as a printer. A daughter, Charlotte, age 2, born in Ohio, is also in the home. (Note that in the 1850 census for them, Charlotte is recorded as "Charles".)

From Ohio, where their two daughters were born, they moved to Indiana. Indianapolis was the next city of residence, and their sons John and Richard were born there. Then they moved to Greenfield, where they lost their son who was Richard's twin.

By 1860, George and his family had moved once again, to Mount Pleasant, Iowa, where Sarah's sister Ann Eliza Harlan's family was living. George worked at providing horses for the cavalry regiments being established at Ft. Harlan.

George and Sarah moved once again, and finally settled in Baxter Springs, Cherokee County, Kansas by 1871, coming from Iowa. Their migration had taken them from their birth place of Kentucky, to Ohio, to Indiana, to Iowa, and finally to Kansas.

George was an Indian agent for many years in Kansas, for a long while with the Quapaw in Seneca. He also had a working farm. It is not clear at this point where his title of "Major" came from or how it was earned.

In 1880, George, Sarah and their son Richard, who was 25 by then, were living in the Garden township of Cherokee County, and the census reports that he is a farmer, and a retired Indian agent.

Sarah died shortly after that census was taken. George lived in Galena, Cherokee, KS, after Sarah died, at least until 1898, and then moved to Topeka, KS, where his son J F was living with his family.

Following George's death, his son John Francis Mitchell, with whom he was living at the time of his death, arranged to have George interred in the same cemetery as his wife Sarah Elizabeth (Peck) Mitchell.

Obituary

Death of a Well Known Gentleman.
Major George Mitchell, of Topeka, Kan., and a brother of the late William Mitchell, editor of THE DEMOCRAT, died at the home of his son, John F. Mitchell, in Topeka, Kan., on Thursday morning last.

Major Mitchell was a man of much ability and rare traits and was a gentleman of the old school. He numbered his friends by the score in all parts of the country. He lived to a good, old ripe age of eighty-four years. He leaves two sons and a daughter to mourn his unexpected and sudden death.

Mr. Mitchell on Wednesday evening of last week was attacked with paralysis and he lingered in an unconscious condition until Thursday morning at 3:30, when he passed from time to eternity. His remains were taken to Baxter Springs, Kan., and laid beside those of his wife.

Thus ends the life of a noble, true Christian gentleman. His good judgment and sound advice will be missed by the many who sought his opinion on many occasions. He was a member of the Christian church of many years' duration. He was a man of many virtues and the last member of his family. Major George Mitchell was well known in our city and during his visits here he was very much appreciated by all who came in contact with him.
