DOMINIC MANCINI, MERRITT ISLAND Dominic Joseph Mancini, 72, known by many as Dom or "Pops", passed away on Monday, September 15, 2008. Dom was born in 1936 in Concord, MA to Lillian and Joseph Mancini, and was raised in Maynard, MA. After graduating high school in 1954, he joined the Navy and served for three years, including on the U.S.S. Randolph. His long career took him from Massachusetts to Antigua, and then to Cape Canaveral, FL, where he worked as a communications engineer and senior communications manager. Pops was a longtime resident of Merritt Island, FL, and was always a nature lover and active community member. He enjoyed fishing, and competed for many years as a masters surfer. After retirement in 1998, many days found him volunteering at Cape Canaveral Hospital (where he was honored as Volunteer of the Year), the Air Force Space and Missile Museum at Cape Canaveral, and the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. His is survived by his daughter, Angela; son, Dominic; grandson, Joshua; and brothers, Adam, John, and Joseph. The family will hold a visitation on Friday, September 19, 2008 from 4 to 7 p.m., at Wylie Baxley Funeral Home, 1360 N Courtenay Parkway, Merritt Island, FL.
