"Indian" John Ewing, son of James and Sarah Ewing, was born in Virginia around 1747. He is remembered in Ohio history as "Indian John" Ewing because he and his sister, Jannetta, were kidnapped by Shawnee warriors near Lewisburg, Virginia in 1764. Although Jannetta managed to escape, her husband and baby were killed. John was adopted by the mother of the warrior who took him, and he became a member of the tribe. He lived with the tribe for three years, until he was released by a treaty between the British and the Shawnee.

In 1774 John married Ann Smith in Pocahontas, Augusta, West Virginia (then Virginia). Ann was born in Ireland. They raised a large family.

John was on the 1786 Tax List of Greenbrier, West Virginia.

John returned to Ohio in 1801, settling on George's Creek which meets the Ohio River opposite Point Pleasant. He moved to the Vinton, Huntington, Gallia. Ohio area about 1816 to 1820.
