Greenbury Baker was born in 1805 to Isaac and Phoebe Waddell Baker in Kentucky. The Bakers and their four youngest children of twelve came to Sangamon County Illinois in the fall of 1829 and settled in Rochester Township.
There is confusion concerning Greenbury's wives and children. This account considers federal census reports, Illinois marriages records, and Civil War records over literary accounts.
Greenbury married first Ann Payne; she died without having children.
Greenbury married second Mary "Polly" Williams Barker Johnson Jan 9, 1834 in Sangamon County as her third husband. She brought to their family her four young children: George Elias Barker from her first husband Richard Barker, John, Samuel, and Andrew Johnson from her marriage to Andrew Johnson.
Greenbury and Mary had two children:
William M "Moses" b circa 1838, shot accidentally or murdered Jan 3 1863 near La Grange Tennessee during the Civil War
Effaline Lyons "Effie" b circa 1840 who married Joseph Prunk.
Mary died May 22 1842.

Greenbury married third Eliza Jane Alexander. Their children were:
Thomas b circa 1843, d. June 14 1864 in Andersonville Prison during the Civil War
Squire W b circa 1843 d. 1874 (Civil War Veteran wounded at Nashville) who married Matilda Mear.
Mary Ann "Polly" b 1848.
William b 1854.
Eliza Jane died in 1869.

Greenbury married fourth Mary Hall on Feb 28 1870.
Greenbury, Mary her parents Elias and Mary Boynton Williams, Mary's son George Elias Barker and his daughter Margaret, Eliza Jane and her parents Jesse and Rebecca Alexander are buried in one row in Mottarville Cemetery. Mary's headstone is the earliest I can find in this cemetery in a published booklet. She and her husband Andrew Johnson who died in 1832 purchased this property in a Land Patent in 1830. It is presumed he is buried there as well.
