Joan Allen married William Scott circa 1840.

William and Joan had 7 children who they raised near Weedsport, Brutus and Sennett in Cayuga county, NY.

1) Orrin Edgar Scott - 1841.

2) William Augustus Scott - 1844.

3) John Albert Scott - 1846.

4) Walter S. Scott - 1849.

5) Amanda Scott - 1855, possibly died young infant or toddler, not able to find any more info. only mentioned in 1855 NY State Census. - her name may have been changed to Sarah listed in 1860, 1870 and 1875 census.

6) Sarah J. Scott - 1855 "not mentioned in 1855 census, possible scenario is Sarah's previous name was Amanda as her parents decided to rename her when only a few months old. Amanda could have been born in Dec. 1854 or early 1855 and had died in which later in 1855 Sarah J. was born.

7) Josephine Scott - 1860.


In the 1910 U.S. Census, believed to be Joan's brother, Morgan Allen, is residing with her son John Albert Scott's family and is listed as Uncle.

In the 1850 U.S. Census, Sennett, Cayuga, NY. It list a person by name of Elihu Ellen(may have been misinterpreted and should be Allen) at age of 65 (born 1785) who may have been Joan Allen's father.


*** 3 sons in the Civil War ***

August 1862, Orrin E., William A., and John A. had enlisted in Auburn, NY. They were assigned to NY 3rd Regiment, Company K, Light Artillery. The 3 Scott brothers went into combat at the same Battles.

date of service: Aug. 25, 1862 to June 30, 1865.


1) Rawls Mill on Nov. 2, 1862 in N.C.

2) Kinston on Dec. 14, 1862 in N.C.

3) White Hall on Dec. 16, 1862 in N.C.

4) Goldsboro on Dec. 17, 1862 in N.C.

5) Chaffin's Farm on Sept. 29 - 30, 1864 in Va.

6) Petersburg on June 9, 1864 to March 25, 1865 in Va.


All 3 brothers were mustered out of Richmond, Virginia at the end of the war. On August 2, 1865 , Orrin would die from a disease he contracted during the war. Walter was too young to enlist during the time of war.
