Funeral services for Walter Dawes, 84, former resident of Giles County, Tenn., and a retired carpenter, were held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the Market Street Church of Christ in Athens, Ala., with the burial in the City Cemetery in that city. Mr. Dawes died on Friday, June 25, at the home in Athens after a two year period of declining health.


Born in August 1880, in Marshall County, Tenn., he was the son of the late Robert Dawes and Anna Turner Dawes. He was a member of the Church of Christ. Mr. Dawes moved to Athens in 1929.


His wife, Mindie Jane Duncan Dawes, died in 1953.


Mr. Dawes is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Herman Tarpley, Lynnville, Tenn., and Mrs. Clarine Black, Mrs. Gladys Kilpatrick, Mrs. W.C. Thompson and Mrs. Eugene Hughes, all of Athens, Ala.; one son, Wilburn Dawes, Decatur, Ala.; 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Mrs. Gilmer Hanna and Mrs. Jennie Bell Turner, and one brother, Clyde Dawes, all of the Stella Community of Giles County, Tenn.
