John Jacob Decker was born in Helmlisren, Baden, Germany, Jan. 28, 1832. When three years of age the family emigrated to this country and settled in Columbus, O. He there grew to manhood, and in 1858 came west to Chicago. Feb. 28, 1859, he came to Springfield, and this city has since been his home. In his early manhood he learned the trade of pressman and followed that vocation all his life until the last six years, when he retired from active work. Since then he has worked only at intervals. He had worked in the various offices here and was well known among the pressmen of this city.

Nov. 28, 1862, he was united in marriage to Margaret E. Taylor, of this city, and to this union eight children were born.
